Making space for positivity: Finding your work-life balance

Positive thinking is often presented as something we should simply decide to do: look on the bright side, smile more, focus on the good.

In reality, it is not always that simple.

When our days are filled with deadlines, meetings, emails, responsibilities and unexpected challenges, maintaining a positive outlook can be difficult. Sometimes, the best way to bring more positivity into our lives is not to actively “think positive”, but to create more space for the things that naturally make us feel good.

At NETO Innovation, we are especially mindful of this. In our fast-paced work, we support ambitious European research and innovation projects involving multiple organizations, countries and tight deadlines. We love what we do, but we also recognize that work is only one part of life.

For us, finding the right balance matters.

Positivity starts outside the inbox

There will always be another email to answer, another task to complete and another deadline approaching.

This is especially true when working on collaborative projects. One submission ends and another begins. A question from a partner arrives just as another problem has been solved. Some periods are naturally more intense than others.

This makes switching off important.

An evening with family or friends, a weekend outdoors, cooking, travelling, exercising, reading, discovering a new place or simply doing nothing for a while can provide the distance we sometimes need.

These moments are not separate from our professional lives. They can influence the energy and perspective we bring back to work.

Give yourself permission to disconnect

Technology has made flexible and international collaboration much easier. It has also made it possible to remain connected almost constantly.

But being reachable does not mean we need to be available all the time.

Creating boundaries between professional and personal time can be challenging, particularly when we care deeply about our work. Yet disconnecting is part of maintaining that enthusiasm over the long term.

Sometimes the most productive thing you can do at the end of a demanding day is close the laptop.

The problem that seemed enormous at 7 p.m. may look very different the next morning.

Make room for what gives you energy

Work-life balance does not necessarily mean dividing every day perfectly between work and personal life.

Some weeks require more professional focus. Others leave more room for ourselves, our families, our hobbies or our personal projects.

What matters is recognizing what gives us energy and making sure those things do not permanently disappear from our schedules.

At NETO Innovation, we each have our own ways of disconnecting and recharging. Spending time outdoors, being with family and friends, enjoying good food, exploring new places or simply slowing down can all provide a welcome contrast to days spent in front of a screen. These small breaks can make a big difference.

A positive workplace is also built together

Our environment matters too.

Positivity at work does not come from asking everyone to be cheerful regardless of what is happening. It comes from creating a workplace where people can communicate openly, help each other and realise that everyone has a life beyond their job.

It can be something as simple as sharing a laugh during a busy day, helping a colleague when their workload suddenly increases, celebrating a successful submission together, or understanding when someone needs flexibility for something happening in their personal life.

And when something does not go as planned - which inevitably happens - having the right team around you makes it easier to put the problem into perspective and focus on what comes next.

Celebrate the journey, not only the result

In our field, results can take time.

A European proposal, for example, can involve months of preparation followed by several more months waiting for an evaluation. Even an excellent proposal may not ultimately receive funding.

If we only allow ourselves to celebrate the final success, we miss many important moments along the way.

Building a strong consortium, finding a solution to a difficult problem, completing a challenging proposal, receiving encouraging feedback from a partner, learning something new or simply seeing a team work well together are also worth appreciating.

Professional life is made up of these smaller moments much more often than major milestones.

Work-life balance is not about getting it perfect

There is no universal formula for work-life balance, and there is certainly no formula for being positive every day.

Some days will be productive and energizing. Others will be frustrating. Sometimes work will take more space than we would like, and sometimes our priorities outside work will come first.

Perhaps positivity comes partly from accepting this rather than trying to achieve a perfect balance.

Make time for the people and activities that matter to you. Step away from work when you can. Enjoy the good periods. Learn from the difficult ones. And remember that taking time for your life outside work can also help you return to your professional life with more energy, creativity and perspective.

At NETO Innovation, we are passionate about innovation and the projects we help bring to life. But behind every project, proposal and deadline are people.

And taking care of the human side of work matters too.
